Minecraft: plugins, mods and worlds

Java or Bedrock, Paper plugins, Forge and Fabric mods, and bringing your own world.

Java or Bedrock

Pick the edition when the server is created. To let both editions join one world, run Paper with the Geyser plugin.

Server types

Vanilla is the plain game. Paper is faster and runs plugins. Forge and Fabric run mods. Switch the type in the startup options and restart.

Plugins

Upload the .jar into the plugins folder and restart. Most plugins create a config folder next to them on first start.

Mods and modpacks

Upload mods into the mods folder. For a modpack, upload the server pack through SFTP and point the startup options at its launcher.

Your own world

Upload the world folder through SFTP, set level-name in server.properties to its name, restart.

Memory

Plugins and mods need memory. If the console shows "out of memory" or players lag, upgrade the plan; it applies within minutes.
